Known problems with Internet Explorer:

If you are not experiencing problems using the ADDS java tools, please disregard this information.
  • As part of the federal antitrust settlement, Microsoft is no longer authorized to distribute the Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM). Rather than include the Sun Microsystems standard Java Virtual Machine (JVM), Microsoft has chosen to discontinue Java support altogether. This in no way precludes Microsoft users from downloading the Sun JVM on their own.
  • Users of newer Microsoft operating systems (XP on), and those who who have an older version of the Microsoft VM may encounter problems using the ADDS Java Tools, and should download the latest version of the standard JVM from the Sun Java website.
Some of the problems that we've seen in the past that can be solved by upgrading to the JVM include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • If you've tried using the new Flight Path Tool and a portion of California was cut off the edge of the map (using either Internet Explorer 4.72 or version 5.x), then please download the latest JVM as distributed by Sun. We are aware of this problem and this is the only fix. You will need to point your web browser to the Sun Java website and follow the instructions to download the appropriate file for your Operating system.

Once you download this file, you can double-click the file icon under the Windows file manager to install the JVM and avoid Microsoft's VM (which runs under IE). This fix may also fix other Java applets you find on ADDS and elsewhere on the Internet, so downloading it should be well worthwhile.

    • If you experience problems viewing any of the ADDS Java applets, such as data being plotted in places where it should not be, follow the instructions below to check your version of the Microsoft VM.
      1. Open the file search utility from the "Start" menu ("Start"->"Find Files" or "Start"->"Search"->"For Files and Folders").
      2. Search for "msjava.dll" on your C: drive.
      3. In the "Find Files window right-click on the msjava.dll icon and select "Properties" from the pull-down menu.
      4. Click the "Version" tab and check the numbers labeled "File Version:." The first few numbers will likely match the version of IE which you originally had installed on your machine. The next set of numbers is the version.

If your version is older (a smaller number) than 3802, we urge you to upgrade your msjava.dll library by installing the new JVM. You can do so by pointing your browser to the Sun Java website. Follow the instructions on the web page to download and install the appropriate file for your operating system. This fix may solve problems viewing other Java applets you find on the internet and will help keep your system up to date to generally enhance your overall surfing experience.
